The GOOD News and The BAD News...

Okay let's do the bad news first to get it out of the way...

Well, unfortunately I won't be moving on in the American Crafter Competition to the finals :(. It was SO fun to be apart of and meet new friends and bloggers and really stretch my creativity in a way I haven't done in a really long time! I'm so thankful to Amy at Naptime Crafters for hosting the competition and giving little Love Sweet Love some time to shine in the bloggy spotlight! That being said...THANK YOU THANK YOU for your votes each week to get me to round 3!! Although I'm sad not to compete in the last round of the competition it is really such a blessing in disguise as I have SO much going on in "real" life this week! :) Namely making my little princess her Halloween costume which I've put off till now because I just haven't had the time! Also, my bathrooms are in DIRE need of a deep cleaning...I won't even tell you how long it's been cause then you wouldn't be my friend. And lastly, because I really want to go to bed before 2 am just once in the next week. :) I'm not sure my body...or my family...can take anymore sleepless nights! Ha Ha! Thanks again for all your support friends, it meant so much to me!! And hey...85 votes isn't too shabby at all, I'll take it! :)

And now for the GOOD news!!

Today I'm over at J&M Eye Candy sharing a super fun and YUMMY tutorial. Come over and take a peek and say hello mmmmkay! I think your neighbors will thank you...

Thanks for popping in today and I WILL have that Halloween wreath up for you tomorrow...get your felt and scissors ready! :) Love ya my lovelies!

American Crafter Round 3 project-A {handy} Advent Calendar

I have SO much in my life to be grateful for (like being in round 3 of American Crafter-Eeeeek- Thank you for your votes last week)! And I love that, due to Thanksgiving, the month of November is a time specifically focused on showing gratitude for the amazing blessings in our lives.

Using the theme hands, I came up with an advent calendar that would help my kiddos be grateful for the MANY things their little hands can do. Being that it's Thanksgiving, I decided to create a turkey calendar-using a pumpkin mod podged in fabric, and a gourd-for the base, and used our hands to be the feathers. Dad's and Mom's hands are the the larger feathers that were cut out of craft foam and covered in fabric. My two kids' hands were cut straight onto fabric and sewn onto the larger hands. This way it's a very special, literal reminder, to ALL the members of our family that...Together, OUR hands can help YOUR hands create, explore, serve, celebrate, and show gratitude-the 5 different category's for the month. I then sewed a line between each of their little fingers to create the pockets to hold the "hand" activity for that day that corresponds to that weeks category. And of course, the BEST part about any advent calendar is the candy, so using twine I tied a tootsie roll to each finger for a treat once the activity for that day has been completed!

Okay, so I started with a few supplies...

***Total cost for this project was less than $10-I used fabric I already had on hand***
-1/2" thick craft foam
-pumpkin gourd
-pumpkin
-traced hand-print for each member of the family
-fabric in different styles/colors (I prefer the traditional look for Thanksgiving, but if you're the rad type I think it would be fun to use funky colors like turquoise and black, purple and yellow, etc!)

First I used the hand stencils to trace Mr. Sweet Love's and my hand prints onto the craft foam. I did 3 daddy hands and 2 mommy hands (5 hands=25 fingers for 25 days. I only wanted 24 since it's an advent calendar for Thanksgiving, so I overlapped 2 of the fingers to count for the same day.)

Using a non-serrated knife I cut out each hand.

I then used pins to hold the fabric for the adult hands in place on the foam so I could decide where the kids cut-out fabric hands needed to be sewed on to.

I sewed each child hand print onto the adult hand fabric and then sewed between each little finger to create the pockets to hold the activity paper for that day.

I used hot glue to attach the fabric hand to each foam cut-out. (this was WAAAAAY more tricky than what I had imagined it would be when I dreamed it up. I almost gave up at this point because I couldn't get the dad-gum fabric to squeeze into all the places I needed it to. I'm frustrated all over just thinking about it! Ha Ha!! I'm glad I saw it through though b/c I love how it turned out!)

I then used E6000 to glue the hands together in a semi-circle, staggered, formation to create the feathers of the turkey.

When all the hands were glued together it looked like this:

I then mod podged some fabric onto the smaller pumpkin (using this technique) and used E6000 to glue that to the "feathers".

It didn't feel as sturdy as I liked, so I reinforced it with pins from the backside.

Next was the face of the turkey! I made a quick waddle to attach to his beak by sketching a waddle shape onto some leftover fabric. I cut out 2 opposite shapes so that I could sew them together and stuff it with batting.

Next I used rebar wire to make 2 turkey legs.

They stuck right into the bottom of the gourd and I hot glued around the hole to make sure they wouldn't slip out.

Awwww, isn't he cute?!

Then I came up with 24 activities that had to do with the 5 categories of using our hands (list of activities at bottom of this post) and inserted them into each of the pockets on the feathers.

Lastly I printed the theme of our advent calendar: Together, OUR hands can help YOUR hands... onto shimmery, red cardstock, and pinned it like a banner to the front of the turkey. I also made some tags with the name of the category for those 5 days and attached them to each hand with pins.

Twine was an easy way to tie up our incentive for completing our "hand" activity for the day!

Gobble Gobble! ;)

Neglectful...

I just wanted to pop in for a quick sec and say SORRY for neglecting you yesterday!! With all the fun of American Crafter I've been elbow deep in fabric all week and have a sink full of dishes, loads and loads of dirty laundry and children that NEED to be played with! I apologize for not getting the Halloween wreath tutorial up for you yesterday like I said I would, but can you forgive me?! Maybe sometimes life catches you in a whirlwind as well?! I don't have time today to post it either, but I'm going to try really hard to get it up for you on Monday, and I promise you'll love it! :) Check back tomorrow to see what project has CONSUMED my life this week! Thanks for understanding!

Spookify a Picture Frame

Did you pick your favorite Halloween printable out of the 20 I showed you in yesterday's post yet?! Just in case you have and you're trying to find that perfect frame to put it in, STOP everything and go CHEAP! I never, ever buy a frame at full price. It's thrift stores all the way for me because spray paint can give new life...or OLD life in this instance :)...to any frame! (and if you have one just lying around your house not being used free is even better!)

I picked up a frame from DI for $1. Spray painted it with Rustoleum's chalkboard spray paint to give it a smooth matte look, and lightly sprayed a layer of Rustoleum's Heirloom white on top of the dried chalkboard paint. Once that had dried I went back and lightly sanded all over it to give it a worn, spooky look to match my spooky Halloween print. :)

Thanks to Ellie G. at Less Cake More Frosting for this fun print!

We had to lock that pretty red apple away under the cloche to make sure little hands don't eat the poison apple!! (my kids LOVE this :) )

I hope you find the perfect printable to match your decor! Thanks so much for stopping in for a little looksy-loo today, it means the world to me that you are here!! ALSO, as a participant in the American Crafter competition, Amy has been so kind to feature each of the contestants throughout the month of October. Today is my day for a little spotlight over on Naptime Crafters so stop by and say hello to Amy and I if you'd like!

Catch ya back here tomorrow for a new wreath tutorial!

20 Free Halloween Printables!!!

Good morning, GOOOOD morning bloggers (and blog readers :) )! Can you guess why I'm overly-and annoyingly-excited for a Monday morning?!

I MADE IT through round 2 of American Crafter!!! Whaaaaa! Thank you so much for your votes to keep me in the competition for another round! Only 6 ladies left for round 3, and they have some serious, lets-get-down-to-business, talent so even if this is my last week in the competition it has been SO fun to be apart of and be able to kick my creativity up a notch! (but maybe, just maybe. you'll vote for me again on fri to be in the final 3?!?! :) ) This rounds theme is FABRIC-so be sure to check back Friday to see what everyone dreams up! (I'm soooo nervous...sewing is NOT my forte!)

Is anybody even still decorating for Halloween?!?! I feel like, even though it's not for another TWO weeks, it's as if Halloween is old news, Thanksgiving is being completely skipped over and Christmas projects are going up left and right! I went to every dollar store in my city today (that would be 3 stores!) and they are ALL sold out of pumpkins. When I asked the cashier when they'd be getting more pumpkins in she looked at me like I was crazy and told me all flippantly-like I was from another planet because I was unaware that the Christmas does in fact begin in October- that all Halloween shipments are over and all they'll be receiving now are Christmas items.

I'm resisting. It's October 17 and I will be posting Halloween ideas till the end of the month. That's just how I roll people. One holiday at a time. So Booyah.

That being said, I can't promise there won't be a few Christmas ideas at the end of November popping up, but that's simply because December is SOOO busy that it's nice to get the decorating done early so you can enjoy the 'real reason for the season'! :)

Sooooooo, to continue on with October MaDnESs, today I thought I'd share 20 of my favorite F-R-E-E Halloween printables-mostly found through Pinterest, but these links below will take you directly to the site so you can print off the one {or two} you love and throw it in a frame! Enjoy!

American Crafter Round 2-Vintage Seasonal Storage Crates

Today I am SO SO SO excited to interrupt our October MaDnESs to share with you my project for round 2 of the American Crafter competition! This rounds theme was House of Order!

If you're stopping over from Naptime Crafters Welcome to Love Sweet Love!! And if you're popping in from anywhere else in blogland I'm so HAPPY you've stopped by to see what's going on here in my little corner of the blogosphere! Aaaaand if you like my little vintage storage crates I would super duper love it if you could take a moment and go HERE to vote for them!! :) PLUS, if you're looking for some order for your home, you are not going to want to miss the other 9 projects; those ladies have got it going on!!

You can check out the quick and simple version here, but if you want all the nitty-gritty, behind-the-scene views keep on readin' my friends...

I started out with some beautiful vintage fruit crates from my great grandmother that were passed down to me last year and have been sitting in my garage just waiting for a project like this! I also had a tub stuffed full of hats, gloves, scarves and snow boots that NEEDED some order love for this winter weather that's already hit where I live!

1. I sewed a liner for each basket by just sewing a basic seam on all four sides
2. With the leftover fabric hanging over the corners I decided to cut a slit up the middle and tie them into knots.
3. In coordinating fabric I cut enough fabric for 2 small pockets on 1 side of each crate and 1 larger pocket for the opposite side.
4. I sewed on all the pockets so that we have a place to put all those little winter items we need quickly on the go...chapstick, sunglasses, gum, ear-warmers, etc.
5. I painted mini clothespins (and 2 regular size for the larger crate) using acrylic metallic copper, to hang some twine from the front of each crate.

When that was all done I added 3 little knobs to the front to hang scarves from and all-together it looked like this:

So that we can make sure to KEEP this an orderly system, I dangled some gloves over the twine so the kids know that box is just for gloves! To make the gloves I just hot glued some ric rac around the edge!

To make the label for our snow boots box I:
1. Mod podged some of the leftover fabric from the pockets onto a mini clipboard.
2. Then I drilled 2 small holes into each corner so I could hang it from the twine on the front of the crate.
3. I picked up this wood piece from JoAnns for .79 and spray painted it with black chalkboard paint.
4. Then I made 3 rolled flowers and hot glued them onto the corner.
5. I lined the chalkboard with some twine (using hot glue), clipped 2 painted mini clothespins to the bottom, and wrote out snow boots!

Easy Peeesy!

All filled up and ready to go...

Now I'm also thinkin' that these might just be the perfect solution for year-round storage! Can't you just see that chalkboard label saying 'rain boots' in the spring, and a tiny, pink-polka dotty umbrella hanging off a knob next to a fantastic yellow poncho?! Or some swim goggles and sunscreen tucked into the side storage pockets during the summer, with some fun, flirty, open-toed shoes carelessly tossed into a crate labeled flip-flops?

I can. :)

Thank you so much for coming on over for a visit today, I LOVE having you here! This competition has been so fun to be apart of, but the absolute BEST part is that I have made some new friends because of it and that makes all the sweat, and late nights and tears worth it! Thanks for being my friend!

***edited:Voting over***
Voting will go through Sunday night 8 pm and I'm contestant #3. :)
